The generic label of ‘artist book’ is given out of convenience to
those artistic productions ‘in book form’ that have nothing to do with the
traditional book. It indicates a particular type of art aimed at the entire
re-invention (images, words, media, formats, design) of the space-time place of
the book (space-page/time-sequence).
Nothing else but one of the multiple
facets of contemporary art.
Widely increased in the last 50
years, this genre has seen - and is seeing ever more so – the active interest
of international artists of the calibre of John Baldessari, Joseph Kosuth,
Dieter Roth, Ed Ruscha and Damien Hirst. It is about a special form of art that
strongly incites experimentation and intrigues the market, which he is able to
stimulate interest in collecting, archiving and study.
The exhibition Künstlerbücher aus dem KoobookArchive
that gathers together an important and amusing sampling of books coming from
the collection of the KoobookArchive/Lab_KA of Catania (Italy), is witness to
the vitality of this field.
The KoobookArchive/Lab_KA
(archive-workshop of the artist’s book), conceived and managed by Anna Guillot
- artist and teacher in the field of the book as well as the curator of the
show – has been undertaking the promotion and research into this sector in
recent years in Italy.
